ArteContemporanea è lieta di presentare I love JaNY, la prima mostra
italiana dell’artista svizzera Sasha Huber (Zurigo 1975).
Di origini
svizzero-haitiane, residente a Helsinki, l’artista si confronta con i temi
dell’identità culturale in contesti quali l’emigrazione e la diaspora, il
razzismo e il colonialismo.
I
love JaNY (2010) è un’istallazione fotografica accompagnata da un
video - appositamente ripensata per gli spazi della galleria - in cui si
ricostruisce il ritratto di Jany Tomba, zia dell’artista, che negli anni Sessanta
fuggì la dittatura di Haiti per stabilirsi a New York. Notata da un agente,
Jany si affermò in poco tempo come celebre top model fuori dagli standard di
bellezza occidentali. La scelta, per esempio, di portare i capelli naturalmente
ricci contribuì a farne un’icona per le black
women americane e non. Nel video Jany racconta tali differenze
culturali e di come sia riuscita a conviverci superandole.
In mostra sarà possibile
visionare anche il catalogo di un
progetto che la Huber porta avanti dal 2008, Rentyhorn.
Impegnata in una
revisione storica del naturalista svizzero Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) come uno
dei pionieri dell’apartheid, la Huber compie diverse performances atte a
svelare l’orientamento razzista dei suoi studi. Tra queste, un viaggio sulla
cima delle Alpi svizzere a lui dedicata ha la missione di re-intitolare la
vetta con il nome della schiava Renty, indicata dallo scienziato come
dimostrazione dell’inferiorità della razza nera.
Sasha Huber vive e
lavora a Helsinki. Si forma tra Svizzera e Finlandia, con un periodo di
formazione a Fabrica di Benetton. Ha esposto in personali e collettive in tutto
il mondo, tra cui Helsinki, Haiti, Goteborg, Londra, San Paolo e Berlino.
Ricordiamo la sua partecipazione alla 19a Biennale di Sydney (2014) e allo
Helsinki World Design Capital (2012). Vogue Italia nel 2011 e il portale Rai Arte nel 2013 hanno intervistato
l’artista presentando i suoi principali progetti al pubblico italiano.
La mostra ha il
patrocinio dell’Ambasciata finlandese.

LaStellina ArteContemporanea is pleased to announce I Love JaNY, the first Italian exhibition of the Swiss artist
Sasha Huber (Zurich 1975).
Of Swiss-Haitian origin living in Helsinki,
Huber faces the themes of cultural identity in contexts such as migration,
diaspora, racism and colonialism.
I love JaNY (2010) is a reconstructed photo installation
of Jany Tomba accompanied by a video
interview, specifically redesigned for the space of the gallery.
Jany
Tomba, aunt of the artist, fled the dictatorship in Haiti in the Sixties to
settle in New York. There she was spotted by a fashion agent, who assisted her
to become quickly a famous top model outside of the western standard of beauty.
For instance, the choice to keep her
natural curly hair resulted in her becoming an icon, not only for black
American women, but women in general. In the video Jany talks about these
cultural differences and how she succeeded in coexisting and surmounting them.
During
the exhibition it will also be possible to have a look at a catalogue of a
previous project who Huber has been working on since 2008,Rentyhorn.
Engaged in an historical revision of the Swiss
naturalist and pioneer of Apartheid, Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), Huber carries
out various performances to reveal the racist orientation of Agassiz's studies.
One of these interventions included a trip to the Agassiz-horn, a peak in the Swiss Alps named after Agassiz.
Huber
renamed the mountain Rentyhorn in honour of the slave Renty who had been used
by Agassiz in his research as a symbol of black inferiority.
Sasha Huber lives and works in
Helsinki, completing her education between Switzerland and Finland, with a
training period at Fabrica Benetton. She has exhibited in solo and group
exhibitions worldwide, including Helsinki, Haiti, Gothenburg, London, Sao Paulo
and Berlin as well as participating in the 19th Biennale of Sydney
(2014) and the Helsinki World Design Capital (2012). Vogue Italy in 2011 and the
web portal Rai Arts in 2013 introduced the artist’s work
to the Italian audience.
